NYOB ZOO XYOO TSHIAB
HMÔNG NEW YEAR IN LAOS
Indochina’s most secret and unknown celebration, Nyob Zoo Xyoo Tshiab or Hmông New Year is usually held in December in Phonsavan, Xieng Khouang Province, North Laos. Marking the end of one year of labor, it remains the only annual resting days for the Hmông community, known as a time to wish for abundance harvest, to give thanks to ancestors and spirits, but also to usher in a new beginning. Rendez-vous for many clans, Nyob Zoo Xyoo Tshiab gathers hundreds of Hmông from all over Laos and the world, particularly the US, and forms the perfect place to consolidate alliances, thus the occasion to find the chosen one, playing flirtatious ball-tossing game. The celebration also showcases folkloric songs, dances and games performed by Hmông people wearing traditional costumes, transported by the vibration of musical ancestral instruments
